Sustainable Recreation and Tourism Initiative

Welcome

In 2019, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy voted to fund the Eastern Sierra Sustainable Recreation Partnership's "Sustainable Recreation and Tourism Initiative," a pioneering commitment to eastern California’s rural outdoor recreation economy and the natural resources that make it possible.

RECREATION STAKEHOLDERS - Track 1

Recreation stakeholders shared recreation project ideas which were then scored publicly at virtual meetings for their stewardship value, benefits for access and equity, and benefits for local communities. Public support can be discerned for future programs and on-the-ground infrastructure.

Climate Adaptation - Track 2

The “Climate Adaptation and Resilience Assessment” track produced “A Changing Climate | Vulnerability in California’s Eastern Sierra.” Included in the final report are valuations of the ecosystem services in the Eastern Sierra region along with valuations of the region’s outdoor recreation economy.

VISITOR AUDIENCE - Track 3

The "Visitor Connection Package" is a program designed by 28 invited representatives of regional organizations with vast and diverse expertise engaging with the visitor audience. The program is not focused on marketing, but rather on a regional “voice” articulating the values of the Eastern Sierra.

PROJECTS AND FUNDING - Track 4

The Eastern Sierra Sustainable Recreation Partnership worked collaboratively to identify eight projects eligible for funding via local and “out-of-region” financial opportunities. The final projects drew upon ideas generated through companion tracks of the Sustainable Recreation and Tourism Initiative.
