SHARP Trail Construction

The Sherwins Area Recreation Plan, or SHARP, includes trail concepts developed by the Sherwins Work Group for implementation by the Mammoth Lakes Trail System in the Sherwins subregion immediately to the south of the Town of Mammoth Lakes. Several SHARP trail concepts have already been constructed in recent years, including the Mammoth Rock Trail Connector (SHARP ID #13), and the Meadow Trail Connector (SHARP ID # 18.) These trails were constructed using skilled Town Trail Crew and CAL FIRE crews with hand tools in 2018.

For the next phases of work in the Sherwins Area, the Inyo National Forest Supervisor provided direction to USFS staff to work with The Town of Mammoth Lakes to develop projects building on important community driven planning efforts such as SHARP that will complement the landscape and work well for the community and visitors.

Mammoth Lakes Recreation Grants for SHARP

In 2021, Mammoth Lakes Recreation was awarded grants from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to fund SHARP implementation efforts including approximately 20 miles of new trail and a new trailhead. Environmental analysis is underway by the Town of Mammoth Lakes and the USFS.

Sherwins Area Recreation Plan Storymap

Joel Rathje, the Town of Mammoth Lakes Trails Coordinator / Manager from 2015 to 2022, worked with the MLTPA team and Mammoth Lakes Recreation to produce a storymap that documents all of the historical SHARP efforts to date in support of the grants awarded to Mammoth Lakes Recreation.

Soft Surface Trails Designed and Constructed from SHARP

The Mammoth Lakes Trail System (MLTS) encompasses an extensive network of multi-use, soft surface trails around the town, offering residents and visitors access to breathtaking viewpoints, unique natural environments, and immersive wilderness adventures.

Mammoth Rock Trail Connector

This classic rolling contour trail was constructed in the summer of 2017 and provides amazing views of the region. The trail climbs gently from the Sherwins Trailhead, meandering along a glacial morain ridge for about one mile and connects with the Mammoth Rock Trail.

Meadow Trail Connector

This hand sculpted rolling contour trail was constructed in the summer of 2017 and provides a scenic and fun way to experience one of the most interesting landscapes in the area. The trail connects the Mammoth Rock Trail with Kerry Meadow through beautiful forests and along scenic ridgelines for about two miles.

Meadow Trail

The Meadow trail is a fun, rolling contour single track trail that provides a contiguous loop trail experience in the Sherwins. Trail users can enjoy a quick ‘lunch time loop’ combining the Mammoth Rock Trail and the Meadow Trail. Please keep an eye out for wildlife and other trail users.

Panorama Dome Mountain Bike Trail

In the summer of 2013, portions of this section of singletrack that winds through the woods across the northern flank of Panorama Dome from the Lakes Basin Path to the switchback near the top of Old Mammoth Road, were completed by volunteers working with the Summer of Stewardship Trail Days program.
