Mammoth Lakes Recreation 1.0 (2009-2010)
Project Description: In the summer of 2009, the Town of Mammoth Lakes and MLTPA embarked on a 10-month effort to establish priorities for the implementation of the freshly drafted Trail System Master Plan. From the outset, however, it was clear that successful implementation of the Trail System Master Plan was tied to a much larger discussion regarding the future of recreation in Mammoth Lakes and the surrounding region. Over 4 separate and iterative micro-efforts, and with the engagement of the staffs, commissions, and representatives of the Town of Mammoth Lakes, the United States Forest Service, Mono County, NGO’s such as MLTPA and Friends of the Inyo, and local businesses, the MLR 1.0 process focused in on opportunities for partnerships and the efficient and effective delivery of recreation in the Mammoth Lakes region.
Project Update: Funded in part by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, Mammoth Lakes Recreation 1.0 contributed to an impressive set of deliverables and outcomes. These included a blueprint to restructure the Town of Mammoth Lakes Recreation Department (“Proposed Structure for TOML Recreation Department (10/05/11"); an inventory of potential roles and responsibilities for the delivery of recreation opportunities in the Mammoth Lakes Region from the fiduciary perspective of local land management agencies and NGOs (“Mammoth Lakes Recreation: Augmenting Agency Capacity”); the initiation of the RECSTRATS process (“RECSTRATS: A Vision for Recreation in Mammoth Lakes and a Strategic Plan for its Implementation”), a community based effort to establish priorities for recreation in Mammoth Lakes; and a master agreement (“Consulting Agreement”) between the Town and MLTPA for the delivery of a variety of services in conjunction with the implementation of the Trail System Master Plan. In 2013, the Town revisited the Mammoth Lakes Recreation process – check out “Mammoth Lakes Recreation 2.0” for all the details.
