August 29: Horseshoe Lake Trails

Project Description: Three co-hosts equals trifecta time on the Mammoth Lakes Trail System! Come and work with Joel Rathje, the recently hired Trails Coordinator for the Mammoth Lakes Trail System, and join Kittredge Sports, Community Skis, and restaurant Skadi at the Horseshoe Lake Picnic Area at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 29. We'll be taking on trail work on the Horseshoe Lake Trails including the Horseshoe Lake Loop and the Mammoth Pass - Crater Meadow Trail. A free gourmet lunch brought to you by Sunrise Rotary and the incomparable Bleu Handcrafted Foods caps off your trail work along with raffle prizes, lots of free giveaways. Close-toed shoes and long pants required; please carpool if you can. Volunteers will get an introduction to trail maintenance skills from Joel Rathje and Friends of the Inyo staff. Those interested in being regular members of the Mammoth Lakes Trail System stewardship team should be sure to show up August 15 to get trained up for future SOS projects.

  • When: Saturday, August 29, 8:30 a.m.
  • Where: Horseshoe Lake Picnic Area for a free bagel breakfast, safety talk and work assignments.
  • What: Summer of Stewardship Trail Days 2015 Event #4 on the trails at Horseshoe Lake including trail maintenance, general clean up, trail brushing.
  • Who: Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome! Please dress for trail work: sturdy, close-toed shoes, hat, and long pants. Gloves and tools provided.

EVENT STATISTICS:

  • 35 volunteers
  • 140 total volunteer hours (35 people x 4 hours = 140)
  • 850 ft of social trail restored on the McLeod Lake Trail
  • 1 Sign Installed
  • 3 Signs removed ( 1 from trail / 2 from parking lot)
  • 7 trail structures maintained (water bars)
  • 150 lbs of trash removed from public lands
  • Sidewalks around the parking area swept 
  • 5 ft of exposed roots covered up and trail reclaimed
  • 400 feet of Horseshoe Lake Loop Trail maintained (narrowed)
  • And a Great Time Had By All - !
